Sierra
Waldorf School was established in 1989 by a dedicated group of parents
and teachers who sought a high quality learning environment for
their children. After investigating various educational methods,
they found Waldorf education to be relevant, effective, and time-proven,
with over 75 years of successful application worldwide.
Sierra Waldorf School recognizes that the young
child learns primarily through imitation and example. Great care
is taken to provide an environment that brings nurturing warmth,
guidance, and cooperation to a child's world of constructive fantasy
and imagination. The week is rhythmically structured to include
storytelling and puppetry, creative play, singing and movement,
games and finger plays, art, baking, and gardening.
The goal of kindergarten is to develop in the young
child a sense of wonder, an attitude of respect and a love of learning-a
true readiness for the academic education to follow.
Elementary and middle school students experience
a well-rounded curriculum:
An English curriculum based on the world's great myths, legends
and literature.
A progressive history curriculum which includes all of the world's
great civilizations and religions. A comprehensive science curriculum
which surveys geography, astronomy, botany, zoology, geology, physics,
chemistry and physiology. A stimulating mathematics curriculum which
develops competence and confidence in arithmetic, algebra and geometry,
Spanish, physical education, gardening, arts & handwork, including
knitting, music, sculpture, woodworking, painting, eurythmy and
drama.
Nestled in the beautiful Rawhide Valley, Sierra
Waldorf School offers classes from Kindergarten through eighth grade.
In the center of the campus stands the historic 1875 Rawhide Schoolhouse,
which is now used as a classroom and assembly hall. The rural site,
surrounded by ranch land and framed by Table Mountain.
The school is centrally located for both Tuolumne
and Calaveras Counties. It is 10 minutes from east Sonora and less
